About the tool

How the Text Diff Checker works

The Text Diff Checker shows exactly what changed between two versions of a text. Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right, or drop a file onto each box, and the differences appear as you type. Removed lines are marked in red with a minus sign, added lines in green with a plus sign, and inside each changed line the words or characters that differ are highlighted.

Choose a side-by-side view to read both versions in parallel, or a unified view that lists removals and additions in one column, like a code review. On phones the comparison switches to the unified view automatically. Long unchanged sections are folded away so you can focus on what changed, and the Previous and Next buttons jump straight to each change. You can ignore differences in letter case, spacing or blank lines when they don't matter.

The summary counts lines added, removed and changed and gives a similarity percentage. When you need to share the result, copy it or download it as a standard unified diff (.diff) that works with patch, Git and code review tools. The comparison runs entirely in your browser, so contracts, drafts, code and configuration files never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my texts uploaded anywhere?

No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Nothing you paste or open is sent to a server, so it's safe for private documents, code and configuration files.

How does the comparison work?

It uses the Myers difference algorithm, the same method behind GNU diff and Git, to find the smallest set of lines to add and remove. Each changed line is then compared again word by word, or character by character, to highlight exactly what changed inside it.

What do the ignore options do?

Case treats "Hello" and "hello" as the same. Leading and trailing spaces ignores indentation and spaces at the ends of lines. All whitespace ignores every space and tab, so "a=b" matches "a = b". Blank lines leaves empty lines out of the comparison.

What is a unified diff?

It is the standard text format for a list of changes, with --- and +++ file headers, @@ line ranges and lines starting with - or +. You can apply it with the patch command or git apply, or paste it into a pull request or ticket.

How large can the texts be?

Files of 10,000 lines or more compare in well under a second on a modern computer. Very large inputs, up to about 120,000 lines or 12 MB, still work, but the word-level highlighting switches off to keep the page fast.
