About the tool

How the Image Compressor works

The Image Compressor makes images smaller so web pages load faster and files are easier to email and upload. Drop in one image or a whole folder's worth and each one is compressed straight away, with the original size, new size and percentage saved.

Photos are re-encoded as JPG, WEBP or AVIF at the quality you choose, or you can set a target size and the tool finds the best quality that fits. PNG graphics and screenshots are shrunk by reducing them to a palette of up to 256 colours, the same idea popular PNG compressors use, which often cuts their size by 60 to 80 percent while looking the same. You can also resize large images to a maximum width or height.

Use the before / after slider to check that the quality still looks right, then download images one at a time or all together as a ZIP. Compression also strips hidden metadata such as camera details and GPS location. Everything happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Image Compressor free?

Yes. It's completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of images.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Images are compressed by your browser on your own device. The page only downloads small open-source helpers when needed (for AVIF output and ZIP downloads); your images are never sent anywhere.

What quality setting should I use?

For photos, 70 to 85 usually looks the same as the original at a fraction of the size. Use the before / after slider to check. Go lower for thumbnails and previews, higher for photos people will zoom into.

How does PNG compression work?

PNG is a lossless format, so the tool reduces the image to a palette of up to 256 colours and saves it as an indexed PNG. Logos, icons and screenshots usually look identical. For photos saved as PNG, choosing JPG or WEBP gives much smaller files.

Why is the compressed file not smaller?

Some images are already well compressed. If the result would be bigger than the original and you haven't resized it or changed the format, the original is kept so you never end up with a larger file.

Which format gives the smallest files?

AVIF is usually smallest, then WEBP, then JPG. WEBP works in all modern browsers and apps; JPG works everywhere. Keep PNG for graphics that need sharp edges or transparency.
