About the tool
How the Background Remover works
The Background Remover cuts the subject out of a photo automatically. Drop in a portrait, a product shot, a pet or a car and an AI model finds the main subject and removes everything behind it, leaving a clean transparent PNG at the original resolution.
The model runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your photos never leave your device. The first time you use the tool it downloads the open-source model from IMG.LY's servers (about 57 MB for Fast, 100 MB for Best edges); your browser keeps a copy, so after that it starts much faster. A typical photo takes a few seconds on a laptop and a little longer on a phone.
Use the slider to compare the result with the original, then choose a background: keep it transparent for designs and online stores, add a white or brand colour for profile pictures and marketplace listings, or use a blurred version of the original for a portrait look. Crop to the subject, pick PNG, WEBP or JPG, and download. Add several photos at once and download them all as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model downloads to your browser and runs on your own device, so your photos are processed locally and never sent anywhere. Only the model files are downloaded, from IMG.LY's content delivery network.
Why does it take a while the first time?
The first use downloads the AI model (about 57 MB for Fast or 100 MB for Best edges). Your browser caches it, so later photos start in a few seconds. On a slow or metered connection, use Fast.
Is it really free? Is there a watermark?
Yes, it's free with no sign-up, no watermark and no size limit beyond what your device's memory can handle. You get the full-resolution result.
What photos work best?
Photos with one clear subject that stands out from the background: portraits, products, pets, cars and logos. Busy scenes, very fine hair against a similar-coloured background, and glass or smoke are harder. Best edges helps with hair and fine detail.
Which format should I download?
PNG keeps the transparent background and works everywhere. WEBP also keeps transparency and is usually much smaller. JPG can't be transparent, so a white background is added unless you picked a colour.
Which AI model does it use?
It uses IMG.LY's open-source background-removal model (ISNet), released under the AGPL-3.0 licence, running on ONNX Runtime Web. The code is at github.com/imgly/background-removal-js.
